Can anyone start credit card churning?

Updated: Jan 15

The short answer is YES! The long answer required me to meet some criteria to be able to start credit card churning.

What I needed to start credit card churning

To start churning credit cards I needed to meet the following criteria.

  • Be 18+ years of age

  • Have a job that pays more than $35,000 a year

  • Have a good credit score

This is the minimum I needed to start credit card churning. Let's go through these reasons in a little more depth.

18+ years of age

This one is pretty self explanatory. Basically, no bank will give me a credit card if I am below the age of 18.

Annual income

Most credit card companies required me to have an annual income of at least $35,000 per annum to apply for a rewards credit card. This means that I need to have a full time job, part time job, or casual job, where I earn a yearly income of at least $35,000 and can prove it through payslips or other documents. To have access to the more premium credit cards where there are llarger rewards offered, I will need to earn more than $75,000 a year to qualify. If I do not earn these minimum amounts my credit card application will be rejected and show up on my credit report. Too many rejections will adversely impact my credit score so I just don't risk it. Unfortunately, if I don't earn enough, credit card churning will not work for me.

Credit Score

A credit score is a metric that financial institutions use to judge how trustworthy and risky a borrower is. A higher credit score signals that a borrower is at a lower risk and more likely to make on-time payments and not default on a loan. Anything above 750 will be considered a good credit score. The higher your score will obviously be preferred. I always make sure I do not have any past defaults and am paying back any loans or credit cards on time. I check your credit score and make sure I have no issues before I get started.

For me, it was very easy to get started and almost anyone can begin the journey of credit card churning. To learn what steps I took when I began credit card churning, please check out my step by step guide guide here.
